The Humphrey Type II Marine Sanitation Device

What Is A Type II Marine Sanitation Device And How Does It Work?

What a Type II Marine Sanitation Device is and how does it work? There are many different types of marine sanitation devices but we will only be discussing the Type II option.

A Type II Marine Sanitation Device is a holding tank that is placed on a vessel in order to collect sewage and wastewater. The tank is then pumped out at a later time by a professional sewage company. This type of device is typically used on vessels that are not connected to shore-side sewer systems.

The Humphrey MSD Type II Marine Sanitation Device specifically works as follows.

Sewage flows from the head(s) directly into the Primary digester (D1), a Secondary digester (D2), and a Filter (F1). As the sewage makes its way through a series of baffles in each digester, it is broken down and dissolved by natural bacterial action. The resulting effluent is then pumped through the filter when the float switch in the final compartment of the secondary digester is activated. Here the effluent is further purified and deodorized before passing through the disinfecting system, where final purification takes place. Periodically, a biodegradable activator is introduced into the head. Humphrey Activator consists of a yeast compound to stimulate bacteria growth and an enzyme compound to liquefy solids. Activated carbon filters may be washed, reused, and eventually replaced after service life has expired.

What function does wastewater treatment play on a boat?

Wastewater treatment is important on a boat because it helps to keep the water clean. Treating the wastewater, it helps to reduce the amount of pollution that is produced by the boat. This is important for both the environment and the people who live on the boat.

When should you use the Type II MSD?

The Type II MSD is ideal for holding tanks because it is designed to break down solid waste. It works by using bacteria to break down the waste into smaller pieces that can be flushed out of the tank. The process is similar to how a septic system works.

There are a few things to keep in mind when using a Type II MSD. First, the device needs to be properly installed in order to work correctly. Second, the tank should be regularly pumped out in order to prevent solids from building up and clogging the system. Finally, it is important to use biodegradable cleaners and chemicals in order to protect the bacteria that are breaking down the waste.

What are some of the waste storage options for this device?

There are three common waste storage options for Type II Marine Sanitation Devices: holding tanks, direct discharge, and macerating toilets.

Holding tanks are the most common option and work by storing waste in a sealed tank until it can be properly disposed of. Direct discharge is less common, but some devices allow for waste to be discharged directly into the water (usually with a holding tank as backup). Macerating toilets are the least common option and work by grinding up waste so that it can be discharged into the water.

Conclusion

A type II marine sanitation device is a reliable and effective way to treat wastewater on boats. By using bacteria to break down waste, these devices are able to effectively remove contaminants from water before it is discharged back into the environment. While type II MSDs require regular maintenance, they are a reliable and environmentally-friendly option for boaters who want to do their part in protecting our waterways.
